Average Order Value (AOV) Calculator
Average order value (AOV) is revenue ÷ orders — the fastest lever most stores never systematically pull. Enter your monthly revenue and order count to get your AOV, then set an uplift target to see what raising it is worth per year.
AOV = total revenue ÷ number of orders. A store doing $20,000 across 480 orders has a $41.67 AOV; lifting it 10% adds $24,000 per year at the same traffic. Use the calculator with your own numbers.

The AOV formula
Average order value divides revenue by order count over the same period:
- AOV = total revenue ÷ number of orders
- Example: $20,000 monthly revenue ÷ 480 orders = $41.67 AOV
How to calculate AOV on Shopify
In Shopify, take “Total sales” and divide by “Orders” for the same date range (Analytics → Reports). Decide once how you treat shipping, taxes, discounts, and refunds and stay consistent — most operators use net sales (after discounts and returns, before shipping and tax). For subscription programs, also compute AOV separately for first orders and renewal orders: a subscription with add-ons typically shows a rising renewal AOV, which is pure retention-side growth.
Why AOV matters
At fixed traffic and conversion, revenue scales linearly with AOV — and unlike acquisition, AOV improvements are usually free to keep. The proven levers, roughly in order of effort:
- Upsells — bigger sizes, premium tiers, one-time → subscription upgrades at checkout.
- Cross-sells — “goes-well-with” add-ons in cart, post-purchase, and in the subscriber portal.
- Bundles and Build-a-Box — multi-product orders at a slight discount beat single-product orders on both AOV and retention.
- Free-shipping thresholds set just above your current AOV.
Make these numbers automatic
RecurX tracks AOV, MRR, churn, and LTV live from your Shopify subscription data, and ships the AOV levers — cart-upgrade nudges, bundles, Build-a-Box, and portal cross-sells — built in with zero transaction fees.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
How do you calculate average order value?
Divide total revenue by the number of orders in the same period. $20,000 in monthly revenue across 480 orders is an AOV of $41.67. Use net sales (after discounts and refunds) consistently.
What is a good AOV for a Shopify store?
It varies hugely by category — consumables often sit at $30–60 while considered purchases run far higher. The benchmark that matters is your own trend: a rising AOV at stable conversion means your upsells, bundles, and thresholds are working.
How can I increase my average order value?
The highest-ROI levers are checkout upsells (including one-time-to-subscription upgrades), cart and post-purchase cross-sells, product bundles, and a free-shipping threshold set slightly above your current AOV.
Does AOV include shipping and tax?
There is no universal rule — what matters is consistency. Most operators exclude tax and shipping and use net product revenue after discounts and refunds, so the metric reflects merchandising performance rather than pass-through charges.
