Cross-Selling
Cross-selling grows revenue by widening the basket: the customer buying coffee is offered filters, the skincare subscriber is offered the matching moisturizer. It’s the sibling of the [upsell](/glossary/upsell) — and for subscription stores it has a special property: a successful cross-sell into the recurring order raises revenue on **every future cycle**, not just once.
Cross-selling is offering a customer additional, complementary products alongside the one they are already buying — “goes-well-with” recommendations that grow the basket rather than upgrading the original item.
Cross-selling definition
To cross-sell is to recommend products that complement what the customer is already purchasing. The offer adds a second item to the order instead of upgrading the first. Amazon’s “frequently bought together” is the canonical example.
Cross-sell vs. upsell
An upsell upgrades the item being bought; a cross-sell adds a different one. A $25 coffee order becoming a $39 large-bag order is an upsell; the same order adding a $12 pack of filters is a cross-sell. Most high-performing stores run both, at different moments: upsells on the product page and at checkout, cross-sells in the cart, post-purchase, and in the subscription portal.
Where cross-sells work in a subscription store
- In the cart — “add this to your order” with one tap before checkout.
- Post-purchase — a one-click add-on offer after payment, which cannot hurt checkout conversion because checkout is already complete.
- Inside the customer portal — existing subscribers add a product to their next delivery; this is the highest-trust, highest-margin placement.
- One-time add-ons to a recurring order — a sampler or seasonal item added to the next box without changing the subscription itself.
The portal placement is the one most stores miss. A subscriber adding one $12 item to a monthly delivery is worth $144/year — and recommendation quality matters more there than anywhere else, because a bad recommendation trains subscribers to ignore the section. RecurX’s AI recommendations rank portal and cart cross-sells by what similar subscribers actually added.
Doing it without being annoying
Cross-selling fails when it reads as clutter. Three rules keep it effective:
- Show one to three relevant items, never a wall of products.
- Make relevance obvious — the customer should instantly see why the item goes with their order.
- Keep acceptance to one click, with the price and any subscription implications stated plainly.
Preguntas frecuentes
What is cross-selling?
Cross-selling is recommending complementary products alongside the item a customer is already buying — for example, offering filters with a coffee order. It grows the basket rather than upgrading the original item.
What is an example of cross-selling?
A skincare store offering the matching moisturizer to a customer buying a cleanser, or a subscription box letting subscribers add a one-time sampler to next month’s delivery. “Frequently bought together” sections are cross-selling.
Is cross-selling the same as upselling?
No. An upsell upgrades the product being purchased (a bigger size or higher tier); a cross-sell adds a different, complementary product to the order. Both increase average order value.
