RecurX vs Recharge: An Honest Recharge Alternative Comparison

Recharge is the longest-running subscription app on Shopify and still the default choice for many large brands. RecurX is a much newer app built around one idea: a flat monthly price with no transaction fee. Here is how they compare on price and features, where each one is the better pick, and what moving from Recharge to RecurX actually involves.

Pick Recharge if you need its track record (since 2014, 3,121 reviews), Shopify POS, a JavaScript SDK or an enterprise contract. Pick RecurX if you want to stop paying a percentage of every order: $29 or $49 a month, no transaction fee, with bundles, loyalty and cancel flows on the cheapest plan. RecurX has a direct Recharge importer.

The short answer: who each app is best for

  • Choose Recharge if you want the most established option on Shopify, you sell in person through Shopify POS, you need Avalara tax, a JavaScript SDK or Storefront API access (Plus), or you are big enough to negotiate volume-based Custom pricing.
  • Choose RecurX if a percentage of every subscription order is your biggest cost complaint, you want bundles, loyalty, win-back and cancel flows without moving to a $499 plan, and you are comfortable with a newer app that has a small review base.

What it costs at your volume

Take a store billing $20,000 a month in subscription orders at a $40 average order — 500 orders and roughly 500 active subscribers. App costs only; Shopify’s own payment processing applies whichever app you use:

PlanBaseFees on $20k / 500 ordersMonthly total
Recharge Starter$991.49% = $298 + 19¢ × 500 = $95$492
Recharge Plus$4991.34% = $268 + $95$862
RecurX Basic$29$0$29
RecurX Pro$49$0$49

The gap grows with revenue because the Recharge fee is a percentage. It shrinks for very small programs: Recharge’s $25 plan has no transaction fee for the first 50 subscribers. Put your own numbers into the transaction-fee calculator.

What merchants say about leaving Recharge

In r/shopify threads where merchants compare notes without a vendor present, pricing comes up first:

  • The 2024 move to a ~$99/mo base plus per-order fees is the most-cited reason to switch. One merchant itemises the cost as “$99/month + 1.25% + $0.19 per” order (1.25% was the older rate; Starter is 1.49% today).
  • The fee-plus-percentage model draws the strongest reaction — see “Does any subscription app NOT suck (or bloodsuck?)”.
  • What keeps people on Recharge is the move itself: “the only reason I haven’t changed yet is the hassle of moving all my existing clients off.”

That worry is fair, and the migration section below is explicit about what moves and what needs your attention.

Where Recharge is stronger

  • Track record. Twelve years on Shopify and 3,121 reviews against RecurX’s 7. If you need proof that an app has handled a program your size, Recharge has it and RecurX does not yet.
  • Ecosystem and point of sale. Shopify POS, Avalara, Stripe and a JavaScript SDK are on Recharge’s list; RecurX does not offer POS today.
  • Longer trial. 60 days on Starter against RecurX’s 14.
  • Enterprise terms. Volume-based Custom pricing, faster support response times and solution-architecture reviews on the top tier.

Where RecurX is stronger

  • No transaction fee. Two flat prices, $29 and $49 a month. Your app cost does not rise with your MRR.
  • Retention on the base plan. Cancel flow with save offers, win-back campaigns, loyalty and build-a-box are all on Basic. On Recharge, bundles and loyalty start at Plus.
  • Storefront design. 16 widget designs that take your theme’s colours, in 21 app languages.
  • Independence. RecurX is not owned by another subscription vendor.

How to move from Recharge to RecurX

RecurX has a direct Recharge importer. It reads your Recharge subscriptions with a Recharge API token and creates a new Shopify subscription contract in RecurX for each one. The steps:

  1. Set up RecurX first. Install it (14-day free trial), recreate your plans and pick a widget design.
  2. Connect the Recharge importer. In RecurX go to Migrate, choose Recharge and paste a Recharge API token. RecurX reads your subscriptions from Recharge directly.
  3. Pause billing in Recharge for the subscriptions you are moving, so nobody is charged by both apps.
  4. Import. RecurX creates a new Shopify subscription contract for each subscription, with the customer, products, quantity, price, billing frequency and next billing date. An import can be rolled back.
  5. Get a payment method on every subscription. Imported contracts have no card attached. A customer who already has a card saved in Shopify can choose it in the RecurX customer portal; anyone else enters a card again. Tell subscribers before their next billing date.
  6. Check the first renewals. Contracts bill on their next billing date. Watch the first ones go through before you rely on the new setup.
  7. Switch the storefront. Move your product widget and portal links to RecurX, and uninstall Recharge once the first renewals have billed.

What does not move: saved cards, past billing attempts and data that only your previous app uses. Your Shopify order history stays where it is.

Card details: saved cards do not carry over automatically. Customers pick a card already saved in Shopify in the customer portal, or enter a card again. To move saved payment methods from your old processor, contact Shopify Support; Shopify says this needs Shopify Plus or Enterprise (Shopify Help Center).
