How to Swap Products in a Shopify Subscription (Native App, Recharge, RecurX)
To swap a product in a Shopify subscription you edit the subscription contract, not the order: in Shopify’s free Subscriptions app under Apps → Subscriptions → Contracts, in Recharge under Customers → the subscription’s Actions menu → Swap, and in RecurX from the subscriber row (or in bulk). In all three the change applies from the next billing cycle; the next charge date stays where it was.
A swap replaces the line item on an active subscription contract while keeping the schedule, payment method, and address. Shopify Subscriptions: open the contract, change the included products or quantity, Save. Recharge: Customers → customer → Actions → Swap (or Edit subscription product for a variant); bulk via the Multi-select tool or a CSV import. RecurX: Subscribers → row actions → Swap product variant, or tick several contracts and use More actions → Swap product variant. Let subscribers swap themselves from the portal if you want fewer cancellations — Recharge has it off by default; in RecurX it is the Allow swap toggle under Settings → Customer portal.
What a “swap” actually changes
A Shopify subscription is a subscription contract — a record Shopify stores with the selling plan, the line items, the delivery frequency, the payment method, and the shipping address. Every subscription app, including Shopify’s own, creates and edits that same object. Swapping a product means editing the contract’s line item: the old variant comes off, the new one goes on, and everything else on the contract stays put.
That is why a swap is better than cancel-and-resubscribe. The customer keeps their schedule and stored payment method, you keep the subscriber and the recurring revenue, and there is no new checkout. The next order is generated from the edited contract, so the swap shows up in the next cycle — none of the three tools below reschedules the next charge just because a product changed.
Two things to check before any swap: the price (the contract bills the new variant’s price from the next cycle, so a swap can raise or lower what the customer pays) and the discount (the subscribe-and-save percentage lives on the plan, so keep the contract on a plan the new product is eligible for).
Shopify Subscriptions (the free native app)
Shopify’s own app lets merchants edit contracts from the admin. From your Shopify admin go to Apps → Subscriptions and click Contracts, open the contract, and update the included products, product quantity, or delivery frequency, then click Save. Shopify’s Help Center notes that updating the delivery frequency also updates the billing frequency.
Customers cannot swap products themselves in the native app. From their customer account they can update contact details, payment methods, and shipping address, and pause, resume, or cancel — so a subscriber who wants a different flavour has to contact you, and you make the change from Contracts. If self-serve swaps matter to your retention, that is one of the documented gaps covered in native subscriptions vs apps.
Recharge: replace a customer’s subscription item
Recharge documents three ways to replace a customer subscription item in its merchant portal (Adding or swapping a product or variant):
- Swap a variant — Customers → Customers, search and select the customer, hover the subscription to open the Actions menu, select Edit subscription product, choose the new variant from the Variant drop-down, click Save product.
- Swap a product — same path, but choose Swap from the Actions menu, select the product, click Next, enter the subscription details, and select Swap product.
- Swap in bulk — Customers → Subscriptions, tick the subscriptions, click Swap in the Bulk Actions bar, choose the new product and variant, decide how to handle pricing, then confirm and process the update. Alternatively, import a CSV with `subscription_id` and `external_variant_id` through the Bulk Managing Subscriptions tool.
Recharge’s notes worth reading before you click: the next charge date of the swapped product is not changed by default; customer-portal swapping is disabled by default and has to be enabled in the portal settings; prepaid subscriptions follow a different process for changing upcoming shipments; if the product uses Product Subscription Plans you must select a Plan so the incentive discount still applies; and on the Shopify Checkout Integration the product and variant titles must match Shopify’s, because the Shopify title overrides the Recharge setting. Multi-currency stores cannot update subscription prices with the Multi-select tool.
RecurX: swap from the subscriber row, in bulk, or let the customer do it
RecurX exposes the same contract edit in three places, and every one of them writes to the Shopify subscription contract directly.
- One subscriber — open Subscribers, find the contract, and choose Swap product variant from the row’s actions menu. Use the per-row action for contracts with more than one line, because it lets you pick which line to replace.
- Many subscribers — on the Subscribers page tick the contracts, click More actions → Swap product variant…, choose the product in the Shopify resource picker (the first variant is selected automatically), and click Swap variant. The bulk action replaces the first subscription line on each selected contract. Bulk operations are a plan feature — the button is disabled on tiers that do not include them.
- The customer, self-serve — turn on Allow swap under Settings → Customer portal. Subscribers then get a Swap product button on both portal surfaces (the hosted portal and the Shopify customer-account extension). The picker only lists variants the subscriber’s plan is allocated to, so a customer cannot move a contract onto a product the plan does not cover; the swap takes effect on the next cycle. If the picker shows zero variants, the plan simply has no other products ticked — fix it under Plans → Edit plan → Products.
Self-serve swapping is a Growth and Scale portal feature in RecurX (the Free and Essential portals are pause/cancel only — see pricing). The same swap also appears inside the cancel flow: Revenue Shield can offer “swap product or variant” as a save offer when a subscriber’s reason is that they are tired of the product, which is the churn-prevention case for swaps in the first place.
Why letting subscribers swap themselves cuts cancellations
“Too much product” and “bored of this product” sit near the top of every cancellation-reason breakdown. Both are solved by a swap, a skip, or a frequency change — none of which end the subscription. When the only self-serve options are pause and cancel, a subscriber who wants the other flavour picks cancel and re-subscribes if they remember to. When swap is one tap in the portal, the contract survives.
The merchant-side checklist is short: allow swaps in the portal, allocate every plan to the full range of products a subscriber might reasonably want (so the picker is useful), and put a swap offer into your cancellation flow for product-related reasons. The wider retention playbook is in how to reduce churn.
Before you swap: a five-point check
- Price — will the new variant bill higher or lower next cycle, and does the customer know?
- Discount — is the contract still on a plan the new product is eligible for (Recharge: select the Plan; RecurX: the picker enforces plan allocation)?
- Inventory — is the new variant in stock at the next charge date, or will the order fail to create?
- Prepaid — prepaid contracts already paid for their remaining shipments; Recharge documents a separate process for those, so check before swapping.
- Notify — the next charge date does not move, so tell the subscriber what their next box contains and when it bills.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the product in a Shopify subscription without cancelling it?
Yes. Edit the subscription contract instead of cancelling: in Shopify Subscriptions go to Apps → Subscriptions → Contracts, open the contract, change the included products or quantity, and Save. Subscription apps such as Recharge and RecurX offer the same edit as a “swap” action, and the schedule, payment method, and address stay unchanged.
How do I replace a customer’s subscription item in Recharge?
In the Recharge merchant portal go to Customers → Customers, select the customer, hover the subscription to open the Actions menu, and choose Swap (for a different product) or Edit subscription product (for a different variant of the same product). Select the replacement, confirm the subscription details, and click Swap product or Save product.
Does swapping a product change the next charge date?
No, not by itself. Recharge states the next charge date is not changed by a swap, and RecurX applies the new variant from the next cycle without moving the date. Only a change to the frequency or the next-charge date reschedules the charge.
Can customers swap products themselves?
Not in Shopify’s native Subscriptions app — customers can pause, resume, cancel, and update payment or address, but product changes are made by the merchant. In Recharge, customer-portal swaps are off by default and can be enabled in the portal settings. In RecurX, turn on Allow swap under Settings → Customer portal and subscribers get a Swap product button in the portal.
Can I swap a product for many subscribers at once?
Yes. Recharge has a Multi-select Swap on the Subscriptions page and a CSV import through the Bulk Managing Subscriptions tool. RecurX has More actions → Swap product variant on the Subscribers page, which replaces the first line on every selected contract. Shopify Subscriptions edits contracts one at a time.
Will the subscriber keep their subscription discount after a swap?
Only if the contract stays on a plan the new product is eligible for. Recharge requires you to select a Plan during the swap when the product uses Product Subscription Plans, otherwise the incentive discount is lost. RecurX only offers variants the existing plan is allocated to, so the plan and its pricing rules carry over.
